Indian coach Sairaj Bahutule defends Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
Dambulla | Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has taken a firm stance on the scuffle that occurred during the recently concluded tri-series match between India A and Sri Lanka A. The match referee has imposed fines on the Sri Lankan players who broke discipline after the match played in Dambulla.
Why Did Tensions Escalate on the Field?
The incident happened after a match that Sri Lanka A won in very low light. Following the tense finish, players from both teams had a verbal exchange, which soon escalated into a physical altercation.
At the center of the dispute were Sri Lankan player Vishen Halambage and young Indian batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Video footage showed the two getting entangled with each other, after which other players and staff intervened.
Recognizing the seriousness of the matter, Match Referee Pradeep Jayaprakash took immediate action based on the on-field umpires' report. According to the report, there was no formal hearing, and the punishment was handed down directly.
Vishen Halambage, found to be the main culprit of indiscipline, has been fined. However, the amount of the fine has not yet been made public. The incident has raised a serious question about the spirit of the game.
Peacemaker Dickwella Also Fined
The most surprising decision in this case came regarding Niroshan Dickwella. Dickwella, who was trying to pacify the dispute between Halambage and Suryavanshi, was also fined.
However, the report clarifies that the fine on Dickwella is for a separate offense, not directly related to this fight. The exact nature of his violation has not been disclosed.
On the other hand, it is not yet clear whether any disciplinary action has been taken against Indian player Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the India A team management have remained silent on the issue.
Meanwhile, Indian team's spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has defended Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He described the incident as unfortunate but supported the young player.
I think it was a bad incident. But, we don't know how he was provoked. Because as far as I know Vaibhav, he is a very calm boy. I am sure he will not repeat it.
Bahutule added that Vaibhav is a young player and will learn from this experience. He also said that the Sri Lankan players should also be taught about their behavior.
This incident is a warning for young cricketers that maintaining sportsmanship and discipline on the field is paramount. It is hoped that both boards will take this matter seriously and the players will learn from this experience.
