The Tri-Nation Series match between India-A and Sri Lanka-A ended in a tie.
Despite poor light, the super over was played on captain Tilak Varma's insistence.
Sri Lanka-A defeated India-A in the super over to secure crucial points.
After this defeat, the road to the final has become very difficult for India-A.
Dambulla | In a thrilling match of the Tri-Nation A Series 2026, a decision by Indian captain Tilak Varma backfired on the team. In a tied match against Sri Lanka-A, the umpires had refused to conduct a super over due to bad light, but after Varma's insistence, the super over was held, and India-A had to face defeat.
This loss not only cost India a crucial point but also dealt a severe blow to its hopes of reaching the final. Now, the team will have to win its last match and also depend on the results of other teams.
In the match played in Dambulla on Monday, India-A batted first and scored 265 runs. In response, the host Sri Lanka-A team also managed to score 265 runs, and the match ended in a tie.
According to the rules for a tied match, both teams were to be awarded one point each. Considering the poor light on the field, the umpires had also made this decision and decided against a super over.
However, Indian captain Tilak Varma did not agree with this decision. He insisted on conducting a super over to decide the match's outcome. After much discussion, the umpires had to concede to his demand.
The Thrill of the Super Over and India's Defeat
In the super over, Sri Lanka-A batted first and posted a strong score of 17 runs. In response, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge came out to bat for India-A.
The Indian batsmen seemed to struggle against the tight bowling of the Sri Lankan bowlers and could only score 9 runs in the designated over.
Thus, India-A also lost the one point it would have received for the tied match. This decision turned out to be a significant loss for the team.
Path to the Final Becomes Difficult
This is India-A's second consecutive loss in the series. Earlier, they had lost to Afghanistan-A under the Duckworth-Lewis method. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka-A has almost secured its place in the final by winning its second consecutive match.
In the points table, Sri Lanka-A is at the top, while India-A is in second place and Afghanistan-A is in third. Only the top-2 teams will make it to the final.
Now, to reach the final, India must win its last league match at all costs. They will also have to hope that Sri Lanka-A defeats Afghanistan-A in their next match, so that the net run rate equation remains in India's favor.
